What are the common bean types?
Arabica - Premium, sweeter and aromatic. Tends to be preferred over Robusta. Grown at higher altitudes to get more flavour.
Robusta - Less flavour complexities compared to Arabica and has higher caffeine content. Tends to be bitter tasting however produces good crema. These are typically grown at lower altitudes.
What does SCA mean next to the products?
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) uses fully certified Q Graders, essentially coffee experts, who evaluate coffee using a 100-point scoring system. Any coffee that scores 80 points or higher is classified as specialty coffee, with higher scores indicating higher quality and better flavour. Tamper 01, 03, and 04 all score above 80, making them truly delicious brews.
Why does altitude matter?
To keep it really simple, when coffee cherries are grown at higher altitudes, the conditions are colder and as a result it slows the maturation rate down of the cherry. Sounds like a problem right? No, in fact this creates more complex sugars and acids creating bright, and more aromatic flavours. Arabica plants grow well in these conditions.
Why different roasts?
Simply put, the lighter the roast, the closer the coffee is going to be to its original flavour. However, medium roast is generally the favourite as it retains the original flavours while balancing the acidity & sweetness. On the other hand, dark roasts are where coffee roasters have more influence to give those distinct smoky and dark chocolate notes like our own dark roast Tamper 04.
